Care and Feeding
When one decides to bring a Norwegian Forest cat into one’s life, one welcomes into on’es home a true life companion. Despite the imposing and somewhat wild physical appearance, the Norwegian is a very sweet cat who loves comfort.
Curious and a participant in the family life with whom the cat shares his days, he is an optimum companion for children to whom he will teach the proper respect which one needs when relating with him. Norwegian cats adapt well to apartments and to the presence of other animals without much trouble.
Obviously, if it is possible for them to be outside it will be something they enjoy very much. But it is absolutely necessary to equip the yard or terrace with all the proper protection to avoid dangerous accidents.
Regarding the grooming, Norwegians don’t need excessive maintenance. It is enough to brush them once or twice a week especially in winter since they have a lot of hair (though they don’t form knots like Persians do, for example,) and in the spring when they’re shedding.
It is a good idea to furnish the area which will host our friend with a good, strong scratch post where he can file his nails.
For feeding, a good quality dry food which you can find in the best specialized pet stores makes a good base since it is the most complete nutrition for your cat. As for wet food, we also recommend all natural brands, preferrably made of small pieces of meat and fish. You can give them meat very often and fish less frequently. (It could cause bothersome diarrhea.)
Both meat and fish must be cooked to avoid the risk of intestinal parasites.
Milk should not be fed to them, however whole yogurt and egg yolks can be given in moderate amounts.
